Powering the Metro Tunnel: Sunbury Line Upgrade

As part of the Metro Tunnel project, Vic Rail required a reliable power solution to support access control systems across the Sunbury Line upgrade. These systems are critical for safety and security, meaning any power disruption could cause delays, operational risks, and security concerns.

To meet project requirements, the power system needed to:

• Deliver continuous power for access control infrastructure.
• Provide a minimum of 6 hours of backup runtime to prevent outages.
• Be custom-engineered to fit within existing network specifications.
  

The challenge was not only ensuring uninterrupted power but also designing a scalable, robust solution that could integrate with Vic Rail’s infrastructure.

PSS Distributors designed and supplied 54 custom wall-mounted DC PSUs, purpose-built for the Metro Tunnel project. The solution featured:

• 1200W at 36V power capacity, ensuring a stable power supply.
• 6-hour backup runtime, protecting access control systems from unexpected outages.
• Robust, tailored enclosures, engineered to withstand railway environmental conditions.

Additionally, our head technician collaborated directly with Vic Rail’s electrical engineers, refining the system’s specifications to meet the exact operational needs of the project.
